School visits

We are working with a wonderful primary school Headteacher, Maria Lewington and her staff and pupils  in John Scurr Primary School, Tower Hamlets, and with the inspiring  Dr. Mark Taylor, (formerly of Addey and Stanhope School,  Lewisham) who is now Deputy Head of East London Science School, Newham, to give their students some experiences of liberal arts education here at Winchester, and to give our own students some experience of life and work in those schools.

Addey and Stanhope School PLATO Conference, 2014.

Addey and Stanhope had an extraordinary conference on Saturday 15th November, 2014. Its participants were students from the school from all year groups. The attached flyer shows the enormous range of seminars that were put on by the students.

MLA students visit John Scurr Primary School in Tower Hamlets, Friday 13th November, 2015.

Tutors and students from MLA spent a remarkable day with Maria and the staff and students at John Scurr… memorable for many things, but not least Mick Kelly’s remarkable philosophy discussion group, and the storm that unfurled itself on the Zumba dancers at lunchtime.

We were pleased to host 20 children and 3 adults from John Scurr. The day was a mixture of food, play, philosophy, and movement… here are some memories of the day…

MLA students visit John Scurr Primary School in Tower Hamlets, Monday 13th November, 2017.

On our visit we were treated to a day long session on bread making! Year 2 students worked from the beginning of the process to the end, helped by the Guild of Master Bakers, and everyone was able to take home the loaf they had made during the day. Needless to say the smell of fresh bread filled the rooms and corridors.

We also attended some Philosophy for Kids sessions, on the theme of bullying. The question that will long in the mind was ‘who was the first bully?’

We will be visiting John Scurr again after Christmas when we take up our own resources in our project called Liberal Arts for Teachers
